Description of work The field of separation and downstream processing technologies equals to special processes and unit operations needed in purification and recovery of process streams such as side and product streams. The products may be biomass components which can be separated after controlled biomass deconstruction steps or chemicals which are produced in fermentation of sugars or in future synthetic biology concepts. Similarly, water intensive processes for practises related to recovery of valuable components in dilute water streams or process water purifications or extraction of valuable components (e.g. fine chemicals) in biomass are studied. The cost and material effective separation processes can be essential for the feasible processes of the new bio based products. Effective process water and waste management tools are often important steps in bio based processes.
